Archetypes

Your perspective is your unique way of looking at things, people, objects, situations, etc. It's how you interpret the world around you. The more you write from your  perspective, the more authentic your songs become.  But do you sometimes have conflicting views within yourself? Who are you really?

The homework is to find your 12 Archetypes. You will be given the first four, so you only need to choose eight more. We will be using these to enhance your songwriting. The more you know yourself, the more you can express yourself authentically. The text is from Sacred Contracts by Caroline Myss.

To start with, we all have these same first four archetypes: Victim, Prostitute, Saboteur, and Child. Don't be thrown off by the connotations of their names.

The Victim archetype may manifest the first time you don’t get what you want or need; are abused by a parent, playmate, sibling, or teacher; or are accused of or punished for something you didn’t do.  You may be afraid to stand up for yourself, or you may enjoy getting sympathy. The core issue of the Victim is whether it’s worth giving up your own sense of empowerment to avoid taking responsibility for your independence.

The Prostitute archetype at its core is how much you are willing to sell of yourself—your morals, your integrity, your intellect, your word,  your soul—for the sake of physical security. Like staying at that job you hate because it pays well, or staying in a bad relationship when you know better. This archetype tests the power of self-worth. If you have self-worth, no one can buy you. Without this, however, you may eventually meet the price you cannot turn down.

The Saboteur archetype may be the one most intimately connected to your ability to survive in the physical world. Fears of being without the basic needs in life—from food to home to a social and personal network—often provide this archetype with the power to haunt you. You can silence the Saboteur with acts of courage and by following your intuition. It serves you brilliantly as a gut instinct that directs you to take action based on hunches rather than on rational thought. To learn to experience that voice, you must respond to it. Only through response can you manifest the courage to expand your creative environment.

The Child is among the most powerful patterns in our psyches because we are born into it. You often hear the term "Inner Child." The Child actually has many aspects, including the Wounded or Orphan Child, to which many people relate, and the Magical or Innocent Child, among others. See which child type you relate to the most.

These first four universal  archetypes are the companions of your intuition. They make you aware of your vulnerabilities and your fears. They allow you to see how you sabotage your creative opportunities, sell yourself short. settle, or give up. They also become your allies in fulfilling opportunities and dreams.

Next you will read through...and it's really long...about 22 pages of various archetypes with descriptions. So make sure you budget your time this week. You already have the four given, PLUS eight more to equal twelve total. Also, decide which Child archetypes resonate most with you.

Your archetypes will become your guardians and will preserve your integrity. They will allow you to become completely self-reliant; through them you will come to see options where others see excuses.

The text is from Sacred Contracts by Caroline Myss. If you find this exercise helpful, I encourage you to purchase the book.

To recap: You will choose EIGHT in addition to the already chosen four of Victim, Prostitute, Saboteur, and Child. 8 + 4 = 12.  You don't need to choose 12. Only 8. Also don't choose Victim, Prostitute, Saboteur, and Child as one of you eight. You already have those in your given four.
